College high-flyers recognised in celebration awards

Top achievers from a Teesside college have been recognised in an annual awards ceremony celebrating the rising stars of the future.

Redcar & Cleveland College’s Celebration of Achievement Awards saw students scoop accolades for their outstanding work throughout 2014/15.

Winners included Alex Conway, who took the Workplace Student of the Year gong for excelling during his physical education apprenticeship at the Freebrough Academy in Brotton.

Health and social care student Danielle Larry won the both the Health & Social Care Student of the Year and Further Education Learner of the Year Award after impressing in her academic studies and at James Cook University Hospital, where she worked as a Therapeutic Care Volunteer (TCV). Her achievements have enabled her to progress to Teesside University to study midwifery – a career she had always set her heart on.

Meanwhile, the Higher Education Learner of the Year Award went to Leanne Bartlett, who passed her HNC in Chemical Engineering with distinction and was recognised in the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Students of Excellence Awards.

Other notable successes included Wendy Hannon, who completed her Level 3 Hairdressing course while battling ill health and bringing up her six children, and Ella Sherwood, who managed to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Health Studies while undergoing chemotherapy to treat early-stage bowel cancer. See below for a full list of winners.

John Chance, acting principal of Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the dedication of our students, who have excelled in their studies and, in many cases, exceeded expectations. Some students have attained excellent grades despite having to overcome adversity, while others have demonstrated their talent on work placements and have gone on to get a job.”
