Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published on 29 December 2015 on a leading dental website. The full article can be read here.

Dr Tariq Drabu in Manchester said “Japanese researchers have been able to alter people’s perception on cleaning efficiency in their oral health routine using a futuristic toothbrush. Volunteers took part at the University of Electro-Communications in Chofu where researchers identified how brushing sounds could have an effect on brushing efficiency.”

Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say “The researchers recorded sounds from within the mouth while brushing using a modified toothbrush. These sounds were then played back to the volunteers to study what effect it hand on them. The researchers did manipulate the loudness, pitch and frequency of the brushing sounds to alter the volunteers perception of their accomplishment. The sounds made the volunteers feel their teeth were considerably cleaner.”

Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying “This could be used as a motivational tool, helping people brush effectively and achieve results. Identifying the sounds that make people feel that they have accomplished their task effectively can ensure that tooth brushing is done properly moving forward. While the prototype isn’t practical for everyday use just yet, the researchers are working on ways to incorporate this new technology into a future toothbrush and hopefully it will encourage people to brush and ensure that they brush properly at all times.”
