£18m sports institute opens near Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

A new multi-million pound health and sports institute in Manchester has officially opened its doors.

Located on the Etihad Campus, which is also the home of MCFC’s Etihad Stadium, the £18m Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP) is a purpose-built environment for education and research.

Catering for a number of sports, the MIHP is the result of six years’ planning and research from Manchester City Council, along with Sport England, which is part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and City Football Group (CFG), which owns Manchester City FC.

Brian Marwood, the managing director of City Football Services, a subsidiary of CFG, said at the facility’s launch event: “It has been a long-standing objective of City Football Group to develop our research into health and performance and this new resource will allow us to make this a reality.

“We are excited at the prospect of working with other elite sports to share best practice and increase our knowledge base, both within our teams in Manchester and across the roup.”

He added: “The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance is the latest addition to the Etihad Campus that not only provides a world-class medical facility on our doorstep, but echoes our commitment to enhancing the local community.”

The MIHP will provide progammes and services for a variety of Manchester-based athletes, including MCFC players based at the City Football Academy, the club’s training and youth development centre.

Dr Stephen McGregor, the MIHP’s institute director, said: “I am delighted that six years of planning and research have been realised today, which wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding teamwork and local support we have received.

“At The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance we are collaborating with leading experts in sport, exercise and health to ensure that we support the development and well-being of every person who enters our facility.”
