EasyJet founder's easyFoodstore re-opens after 25p food hysteria

The pilot easyFoodstore, founded by EasyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou’s, has reopened in West London today following its temporary closure earlier in the week after it ran out of stock.

The super budget grocery outlet, which sells a range of 76 different products including biscuits and pasta, celebrated its launch this week by offering all items for 25p each. However, queues of bargain hunters had cleared the shelves and by Wednesday the shop, which is located in Park Royal, had to temporarily close so that it could re-stock.

Now that stocks have been replenished, the shop has reopened and has endeavoured to continue with its introductory 25p offer until the end of February.

In reaction to the overwhelming demand, a spokesperson for the budget retailer said: “The level of interest has been completely overwhelming. The last people through the door today had travelled up from Canterbury. We anticipated we had enough stock to last a couple of weeks but it has just gone in a day and a half.”

Greek-Cypriot entrepreneur Stelios has been toying with the idea of a super budget grocers for a few years and hopes the pilot will evolved into a nationwide chain.

Commenting in 2013, he claimed the inspiration for this new budget grocer venture stems from the use of food banks in the UK and hoped it would ‘underline the need for additional reliable day-to-day provision of basic foodstuffs’.
