Foodbank given boost thanks to Teesside builder

Billingham foodbank has been given £1,000 from Persimmon Homes Teesside as part of the builder’s year-long initiative to support local good causes.

The charity provides emergency supplies to individuals and families who are in crisis and struggling to purchase food.

The donation is made from Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme, which is a pot of £24,000 donated to local individuals, groups and charities.

Billingham Foodbank, a franchise of the Trussell Trust, launched in 2011 in the back rooms of a local church. Now with a town centre premises in Billingham and outreach distribution centres in Stockton and Port Clarence, the foodbank is the busiest in Teesside.

Jill Coyle, project manager for the Billingham Foodbank, said: “We are delighted that Persimmon Homes have chosen us to receive £1,000 from their community fund.

“The donation will help us provide a six week healthy cooking course where families can learn easy ways of feeding a family. They cook and take home a good meal each week and upon completion receive their own slow cooker and recipe book.”
