Travel chaos averted as RMT union calls off tube strike
The rail, maritime and transport (RMT) union has announced that this weekend’s planned 48-hour tube strike has been called off.
RMT staff had planned to stage a walkout from Saturday evening until 8:59pm on Monday however, after talks between the RMT and London Underground, strike action has now been averted.
A statement from the RMT said: “As a result of a long and hard fought campaign we have been able to make significant progress in the talks this week which has enabled us to now suspend all industrial action in the station staffing dispute.
“The breakthrough has been secured through the solidarity of the workforce and their willingness to take industrial action to defend jobs and safety.”
Londoners had been bracing themselves for travel chaos across the tube network this weekend, as RMT staff had planned to strike owing to a long-running dispute over ticket office closures.
Further walkouts planned by 1,500 maintenance staff due to what the union calls ‘basic safety issues’ are still to go ahead.
