Work on £107m Warrington retail scheme gets underway

Work on the multi-million pound Bridge Street Regeneration Project in Warrington is now underway, with North West building group Construction Partnership UK (CPUK) on site delivering phase one.

Appointed to the £107m scheme by Warrington Borough Council last year, CPUK is creating a 25,500 sq ft retail shell and mezzanine floor that will serve as a temporary market hall once complete in Spring 2017.

The town’s existing market will move into the temporary site while the old market building is demolished and the new, permanent £10m hall is under construction.

Once the permanent hall is complete and the market moves into its new home, the temporary shell will be converted for future retail use.

The MD at CPUK, Steve Burke, said: “The Bridge Street Regeneration Project is an ambitious investment project and the construction phase will bring welcome employment opportunities for some of the local population and construction related businesses.

“As a company based in the North West, CPUK is proud to be working on what is such an important project for Warrington.”

The scheme is expected to create around 400 new jobs in the leisure, restaurant and retail sectors once complete in 2019, while creating up to 400 construction jobs during the building process.

Council leader Cllr Terry O’Neill called the temporary market an “integral part” of the regeneration effort, adding: “[The structure] will provide our market traders with the setting they need to continue trading whilst WBC delivers the brand new, permanent market hall building.”

The Bridge Street project is being delivered on behalf of the borough council by regeneration organisation Warrington & Co., with Muse Developments on board as the scheme’s development manager.

David Burkinshaw of Muse Developments commented: “Commencing construction on this next phase marks another major milestone for the Bridge Street Quarter project. Importantly it will facilitate the relocation of the market, paving the way for the wider leisure, retail and office scheme to be realised.”
