Six month countdown to Tri Liverpool

British Triathlon and Liverpool City Council urge local people to help their heart this Valentine’s Day and take up triathlon training

Liverpool, Friday, February 12, 2016: Sunday February 14, 2016 is not just Valentine’s Day, but the six-month countdown to Tri Liverpool. The spectacular city-centre triathlon event takes place on Sunday, August 14 and will bring together elite athletes and complete triathlon novices across a looping closed-road urban course.

Mark Lancaster, centre area manager of Liverpool Lifestyles, and triathlete said:

“This Valentine’s Day you can really help your heart and your overall fitness by signing up to take part in this year’s Tri Liverpool event. If you’re a complete beginner, enter the GO TRI+ Beginner distance by Valentine’s Day and you can get a month’s free membership to any Lifestyles Centre. We run special GO TRI triathlon training sessions for beginners to give you a feel for the sport and get you race ready.”

The GO TRI scheme is a national initiative, available in Liverpool, to encourage people who have not taken part in triathlon to give it a try. Specialist training sessions, delivered by experienced trainers take place at Liverpool Lifestyles Centres in Wavertree, Garston and Alsop, with a new class launched this month at Peter Lloyd centre in West Derby.

CEO of British Triathlon, Jack Buckner, commented:

“With six months to go until Tri Liverpool, it’s a great time to start thinking about your training to make sure you’re race ready on the day. GO TRI training sessions allow anyone to try all three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running together in a friendly, fun and supportive environment. Triathlon training is excellent for overall health and the GO TRI training sessions allow you to develop at your own pace. We look forward to welcoming a record number of beginners to Tri Liverpool in 2016.”

Cllr Wendy Simon, cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, added:

“In 2015, 45% of local people who took part in Tri Liverpool made their debut in the sport. It is hoped that this number of first-timers will rise in 2016 through initiatives such as free Lifestyles membership and access to GO TRI training. We want to encourage even more novice triathletes across all distances and specifically increase entrants to the GO TRI + beginner distance race at Tri Liverpool in August.”

The GO TRI + beginner distance race will see novice entrants tackle a 400m open water swim in Liverpool’s docks, a 10km bike ride around a loop of the city on closed roads and a final 2.5k run to the finish line. Those looking for a greater challenge can enter the sprint and standard categories, with the standard race acting as an opportunity to qualify to represent the Great Britain Age-Group Team.

TV presenter and Tri Liverpool ambassador, Louise Minchin, said:

“I started triathlon quite late but it has changed my life. I qualified in my age-group to represent Great Britain which was one of the best things I have ever done. It’s never too late to start and give it a try, especially with the GO TRI + beginner race for anyone who hasn’t had any experience of triathlon before.”

Free Lifestyles membership offer ends at midnight on February 14 and is valid on GO TRI + beginner distance entries only. Enter online at www.Triliverpool.com using the code LIFESTYLES. Eligible entrants will be contacted by email with instructions on how to claim their free Lifestyles membership.
