Rough Diamond Laces Up For Death Valley Half Marathon

A courageous jeweller from Newark has taken part in one of the world’s most grueling half marathons at Death Valley in Nevada to raise money for Nottingham based The Harley Jae Trust.

Samuel Andrew Jones ran the demanding 13.1-mile course on February 6 and raised £4000 for the charity, which raises money for children with life limiting and life changing conditions and to support Nottingham’s Paediatric Critical Care Unit.

Despite only starting serious training on January 4, Samuel has managed to lose an astonishing 1.5 stone due to high intensity training twice a day at Suggy’s gym in Newark, focusing on altitude training and building up his cardio fitness levels.

Samuel Andrew Jones, who runs Andrew Michaels Jewellers with his Father, 26, said: “I used to be a good runner at school, so this training has helped me to regain my fitness. I started this journey at 19 stone and I have lost an incredible 1.5 stone in less than a month.

“I am overwhelmed with all support I received and am delighted to have helped such a fantastic cause.”

Despite the difficult conditions, the entire half marathon course was below sea level, completely surrounded by desert wilderness and runners were able to appreciate fantastic views of the mountains surrounding Death Valley.

This was not the first time that generous people have taken part in punishing challenges abroad to support The Harley Jae Trust, in November, Harley’s mum Lucy Jayne Blanchard and three other volunteers trekked the Sahara desert for the charity.

Joe Rafter, charity founder, said: “We really appreciate the hard work that all of our volunteers are doing. This is a special charity event because Samuel has never run this distance before which shows his incredible determination and dedication to our cause.

“We’re delighted to be doing another charity event oversees as the charity is being seen around the world. The more exposure and the more events we can do will only benefit the charity and help children in Nottingham. We are extremely grateful to everyone who is helping to support The Harley Jae Trust.”
