Carol Malia appointed as Vice President of the Community Foundation and will host its Women’s Fund lunch

The Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland has appointed Carol Malia to be an honorary Vice President. Carol is well known for her career as a journalist and presenter on Look North, the BBC’s nightly new programme in the North East. She has spent most of her working life in the region and undertaken a number of previous charitable roles here. Last year, she was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland. In her first engagement as Vice President, Carol will host the Community Foundation’s sold out International Women’s Day networking lunch on 4 March in support of its Women’s Fund.

Carol Malia, said: “It was a great honour to receive the invitation from the Community Foundation to be a Vice President. The Foundation’s work to inspire and support philanthropy to benefit communities in our region is really important and worthwhile, and the diversity of groups and charities it supports is rich, from the grass roots up. I am delighted to support the Foundation in this honorary role, and am looking forward to my first engagement as a Vice President hosting this year’s Women’s Fund lunch.”

Other Vice Presidents of the Community Foundation include Kate Adie OBE, and the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne & Wear, Sue Winfield OBE. The Foundation’s Honorary President is the Duke of Northumberland. The Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation was established by Dame Margaret Barbour in 1999 to encourage collective philanthropy to support women-only causes in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. The Fund has since awarded over £300,000 to help women to feel safe, supported and confident when confronted by abuse, discrimination and a lack of opportunities.

Ashley Winter OBE, Chair of the Community Foundation, said: “The honorary President and Vice Presidents of the Community Foundation give their time for free to support and endorse our work. They help us connect to people and organisations across our patch, and they provide a great sounding board for the trustees and staff team. So it is fantastic for us that Carol has accepted an appointment as a Vice President. We are grateful for her support and very much look forward to working with her.”
