Councils offer involvement to strategise Newcastle and Gateshead’s digital future

Newcastle and Gateshead Councils are on the hunt for influential individuals and groups in the North East digital sector.

Council commerce chiefs want to gather those concerned with the development of digital in the region to help create new strategies to support future growth in the sector.

After launching an online survey last month, the bodies are now moving on to phase two of a consultation process, via the launch of dedicated focus groups next month.

Both Councils have tasked North East business development firm Auxin Associates to help coordinate the consultation process.

Auxin’s David Anderson said: “It’s crucial that we hear from all interested parties in this process. We would urge everyone to take up the invite to get involved. These focus groups are vitally important and ensures everyone has their chance to have their voice heard.

“The eagerness and willingness to help already proves there is a real desire for Newcastle and Gateshead to take its rightful place as a global destination for digital innovation and excellence.”

Pat Ritchie, chief executive of Newcastle City Council said: “The Digital sector is the fastest growing and most dynamic part of Newcastle’s economy. Sustaining this trajectory comes with many challenges, including securing the right skills, funding, property and business support – alongside product innovation and achieving the necessary sales.

“Working with partners across the public and private sector, we are committed to doing all we can to help create the conditions to enable local businesses to be successful.”

Councillor Mary Foy, cabinet member for economy at Gateshead Council said: “As a council, we are attracting businesses at the cutting edge of digital technology to Gateshead. This research will help to gather the information and the data we need to help fully support the digital sector in the future.”

Those already supporting the project are Paul Lancaster, partnerships manager at Tech North, and Tristan Watson, co-founder and managing director of tech accelerator programme, Ignite.

Tristan said: “There are a number of well-established and successful digital organisations and representative bodies who share a passionate desire to attract investment, interest and talent to the North East.

“It’s important that everyone involved in this sector takes part, so that any future strategy is designed to best support the region and help the fantastic activity that’s already taking place.”

The extensive research projects are asking for the input of all interested parties, including digital employers, skilled employees, educators and leading representative groups.

Those wishing to take part can register their interest and complete the survey here. Two focus groups, both at Campus North, will take place on Tuesday 1 March 1 and Wednesday 2 March.
