Charity gets a taste for economics

A wine tasting event hosted jointly by the Northumberland and Durham Lord’s and Lady Taverners provided guests with the chance to not only broaden their knowledge of wine but also gain some sound economic advice.

Guest speaker, the investment expert and well known media personality, Justin Urquhart Stewart of Seven Investment Management (Seven IM) in the City of London, made the trip north as part of his firm’s commitment to support the charity this year. While guests sampled wines from six different countries, he provided an interesting insight into their financial markets.

He said: “It gives me great pleasure to be back in the North East again and as a firm, we are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause. There is a great deal of movement in financial markets presently and the audience was very enthusiastic in its support.”

Almost 80 guests attended the event held in the historic Trinity House on Broad Chare where wines were supplied by Alastair Stewart of Richard Granger Wines. The Catering Academy at Newcastle College provided a team of waiting staff for the event as well as creating a delicious selection of canapés.

Sophie Lacey, chair of the Lady Taverners, added: “We raised well over a thousand pounds for the charity on the night which is great news and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable evening. I should like to thank everyone who attended for their support and particularly Justin and the team from Seven IM.”

The Lord’s Taverners is the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity whose objective is to give disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance.

Every year, the Lord’s Taverners donates over £3 million to help young people of all abilities and backgrounds participate in sporting activities. In 2015 alone the Lord’s Taverners gave 9.4 million sporting chances across all of its charitable programmes
