Walter Thompson nominated for two top awards

ONE of the region’s leading construction companies has been nominated for two prestigious industry awards.

Northallerton-based builder Walter Thompson has been nominated twice in the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards.

The Considerate Constructors’ Scheme was introduced in 1999 to recognise and reward the UK’s most considerate sites for the contribution they have made toward improving the image of construction. The scheme looks at measures companies have put in place to be more considerate to neighbourhoods, their workforce and the environment.

Sites nominated will be presented with bronze, silver or gold at a glittering awards ceremony at The Lowry in Manchester later this year. Walter Thompson has been a member of the scheme for ten years, winning an award in each of those years. The company became an Associate Member in 2008.

The two sites nominated in this year’s awards are Stokesley Primary School and Linthorpe Primary School, which both involved refurbishment and extension works. Walter Thompson’s Contract Manager for both projects was Peter Goodburn, and Site Managers were Mike Hamm at Linthorpe and Ian Saye at Stokesley.

Members of the Walter Thompson team struck up a unique bond with Linthorpe pupils while they were working on the site. The Middlesbrough school filmed a thank you video to the company after workers had helped organise a Remembrance Day service, sang in the school choir and had their faces painted for a charity day.

“They were excellent ambassadors for the building trade and acted as role models for our pupils,” said Head of School Sarah Lymer.

Mrs Lymer had particular praise for Mike Hamm, Site Manager: “The attention to detail was excellent. Mike left no stone unturned in ensuring all phases that were handed over were of the highest quality. He was able to advise us throughout the process where decisions had to be made and went that extra mile, while he was on site to help us out any way he could.

“One pupil in particular took a keen interest in the project and wrote a whole diary about building works and Mike.”

Paul Hammerton, Managing Director at Walter Thompson, said the company was delighted to have been nominated in such well-respected awards: “Consideration to neighbours of our sites is a real priority and something we take really seriously. These nominations, and our track record at the awards are recognition of the care we take when working in local communities, and of our talented and committed workforce.”
