Leeds city centre site set for transformation as plans approved

Full planning approval has been secured for the redevelopment of a redundant 2.5 acre site at the junction of Regent Street and Skinner Lane on the edge of Leeds city centre.

The work is planned to get underway in May and be completed by Christmas.

The approval comes after an unusually long planning process pursued by local developer, Gregory Property Group, to transform the derelict site and bring convenience and leisure facilities, as well as new jobs, to the neighbourhood which incorporates Mabgate.

Gregory has secured strong performing occupiers for the site which was formerly a Reg Vardy Renault dealership before closing down some years ago.

Discount food retailer, Aldi has committed to a 16,500 sq ft food store along with Pure Gym taking 18,500 sq ft for a 24-hour fitness facility. In addition Poundworld Retail is taking 7,500 sq ft.

Barry Gregory, Chairman of Gregory Property Group, said: “The arrival of three quality tenants is excellent and welcome news for the local community which has always supported the venture.

“The site has been vacant since September 2008 and become a major eye-sore. Recently it has been of concern to Leeds Council on account of anti-social behaviour. It has been a testing and arduous process securing consent for what we believe to be the best use for the site, endorsed by the public.

“We are much relieved and aim to begin construction after Easter subject to completing our funding arrangements which are in hand. This scheme will transform the immediate area and enhance the approach to Victoria Gate. From a trading viewpoint Aldi, Poundworld and Pure Gym should all benefit from the area’s population growth with 72,000 residents living within a five minute drive time.”
