Alnwick Playhouse receives a £1,000 fundraising boost

A Northumberland arts centre has been gifted £1,000 to help to breathe new life into its backstage areas.

Alnwick Playhouse received the funding from Persimmon Homes North East as part of the builder’s Community Champions initiative, which is a pot of £24,000 for local groups, clubs and good causes.

The news follows on from last year’s transformation of the centre’s green room when 15 pupils from Duchess’ Community High School took up the challenge of using up-cycling techniques and a small budget to redecorate the space in a 1950s theme.

Claire Newton, Arts Development Manager for Alnwick Playhouse, said: “Thanks to this donation from Persimmon Homes, we can start working towards our next ambition for the backstage areas and invite groups to come forward who would like to be part of the redecoration challenge for our dressing rooms and participate in Arts Award.

“The space is regularly used by local community groups and the work that has been completed to date provides a cool and calming space for all to enjoy. We can’t wait to work with young people to make the dressing rooms, corridor space and toilets just as vibrant.”

Debbie Zaben, sale and marketing director for Persimmon Homes North East, said: “Alnwick Playhouse is a wonderful and vibrant arts centre, and a remarkably strong and valuable part of the community. We are only too pleased to be able to offer our support.

“We now want to hear from more clubs, groups and good causes as we look to allocate more funding over the next month. All we ask is that they have already worked hard to raise money themselves, and we will then match this effort with funding of up to £1,000.”
