Government launches major study for £15bn project to transform South East road network

The government has launched a major study that will look at ways to improve the transport infrastructure in the South East as part of a £15bn project.

One of the main focuses of the study will be ways to improve the performance of the road network between junctions 10 and 16 of the M25.

It is part of a wider government initiative to look at ways in which improvements to the UK’s transport infrastructure can help the economy grow between 2020 and 2025, and is the sixth and final strategic review to be launched.

The government is looking to invest £15 billion to create 1,300 extra miles of lanes up until 2020 in what is the biggest upgrade to the road network in a generation.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Road Minister Andrew Jones said: “We are making a £15 billion investment in our roads – the biggest in a generation – to deliver better journeys and put the infrastructure in place for our economy to grow.

“We have a long-term plan for Britain so we are carrying out 6 strategic studies to decide what further improvements we can make. We are looking at this section of the M25 as it is one of the busiest sections of the road network.”

The study is set to progress until the end of the year.
