Keepmoat adds to North East housing plans with £12m Throckley development

Construction firm Keepmoat has announced plans to provide a new £12m mixed homes development in Throckley, which will provide housing for both first time buyers and older people.

The news follows housing developer Barratt Homes North East last week revealing plans to provide £17.5m worth of affordable housing across the region.

Working in partnership with Leazes Homes, Your Homes Newcastle and Newcastle City Council, Keepmoat will deliver 45 two and three bedroom houses, plus 46 older persons’ apartments and four older persons’ bungalows.

Ian Prescott, land and partnerships director for Keepmoat in the North East said: “We’re delighted to be partnering the Council, Leazes Homes and Your Homes Newcastle to realise the Council’s ambitions for Fairer Housing in Newcastle. This is another fantastic example of what Keepmoat in partnership can deliver.

“As well as supporting first time buyers to get on the housing ladder through schemes like Help to Buy, this new development will provide a range of housing and care solutions for older people and those with dementia; meaning we will meet a wide range of housing needs in the city.

Bill Midgley, Chair of Leazes Homes, added: “Leazes Homes has a strong track record of working in partnership with Keepmoat and Newcastle City Council to realise our collective vision for the city. This development will follow that of Lawson House, our extra care scheme currently under construction in Byker, and will add to the fantastic supported accommodation available from Leazes Homes across Newcastle.

“As increasing numbers of people are diagnosed with a form of dementia and our population continues to age, it is vital that we have relevant accommodation and services in place to help. We’re particularly proud to be responding to the latest research around how design can support those living with this heart-breaking disease and hope to offer some comfort to those affected and their families.”

Cllr Jane Streather, the council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Housing said: “We’re delighted to be working with our partners in delivering this innovative new development in Throckley, where the take up speaks for itself. Wylam Park is intended to match the changing needs of our residents, which will help us to deliver on our commitment to create more balanced and inclusive communities with lasting benefits.”
