Become a Leeds Big Data Leader

Event to strengthen city’s reputation as digital technology hub

Leeds-based data expert The DataShed is bringing together specialists from across the UK to offer 20 Leeds developers the opportunity to become the city’s leading experts in Big Data at a lab event.

Big data is high-volume, complex data that needs innovative processing and interpretation before it can offer valuable information, such as insights into consumer buying behaviour.

Organised by The DataShed and global data and information system experts, cap hpi, the series of one day lab events aim to identify core opportunities in data analytics with hands on demonstrations and practical examples of the latest cutting edge data tools. The first event will see the developers exploring Apache Spark which is a fast and general engine for large-scale data processing.

Leeds already has a strong digital technology sector, specialising in data analytics and management which underpins strengths across health analytics, financial technology and data science. But, the explosion of data and proliferation of big data analysis tools has left many organisations struggling to cope with increasing demand for internal expertise and worried about wasting time and money on new tools and technologies.

Hosted by cap hpi at Capitol House, Bond Court, Leeds, on 13th April, the data lab event will showcase some of the newest big data tools and will teach developers practical skills such as how to build their own Hadoop cluster and how to use Apache Spark to fix data problems. All proceeds of the event will be donated to Leeds charities Candlelighters and St George’s Crypt.

To register for the event developers should email their details to hello@thedatashed.co.uk

Ed Thewlis, Managing Director of The DataShed, which works with businesses including Qantas, Hermes UK and Provident Financial, said: “Big Data analysis has been identified by ministers as one of the “eight great technologies” in which the UK is internationally competitive. Data is a hot topic in Leeds right now, with many multinational companies choosing to base their data teams here. However, out of the big data ecosystem come tools and techniques applicable to businesses of every size and this event is about helping local developers learn how to implement the newest tools and benefit from the opportunities that big data affords.”

Andrea Preston, HR Director at cap hpi said: “Over the last few years the Leeds area has grown significantly as a business hub with a number of large corporations moving into the city. This trend is showing no sign of slowing and as a result, the need for quality IT developers has never been greater”

“This is great news for both experienced and developing data specialists, who have a great deal of choice in and around Leeds. What is important is that businesses, serious about recruiting the best technology talent, make the roles they offer exciting and challenging.”
