Wirral golf course set for footgolf transformation

In a bid to drive visitor numbers at Arrowe Park Golf Course on the Wirral, the site’s pitch and putt course will temporarily transform into a venue for footgolf in the coming weeks.

Fans of the emerging hybrid sport, in which players attempt to kick a football into a hole in the fewest possible shots, have before now had to travel to Cheshire or Liverpool for a round.

Running from March 19 - 27, the changes at Arrowe Park will mark the first time the sport has been available on the peninsula, which is home to more than a dozen golfing venues.

Cllr Chris Meaden, Wirral Council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Footgolf is an emerging sport that attracts all kinds of different people to use golf courses.

“We are very sensitive to the effect this will have on our municipal courses, and that is why we’ve researched how to implement this without any detriment to our fantastic facilities.”

He added: “Giving everyone the opportunity to take part in leisure and cultural opportunities is one of our pledges for 2020, and bringing in exciting new sports like footgolf will play a part in that.”

The authority’s community golf coach, Neil Price, said the council was advised by the UK Footgolf Association, as well as other local authorities, in its decision to bring footgolf to Arrowe Park.

He explained: “[We] hope eventually to have leagues, competitions and kids clubs playing footgolf in Wirral.

“This is a real growth sport and something we hope to attract a lot of Wirral people to try out.”
