£11m student complex to open on famous Sheffield nightclub site

A new £11m student complex is set to rise on the site of the famous former Gatecrasher nightclub in Sheffield.

Developers are giving a new lease of life to the site at the corner of Arundel Street and Matilda Street in the city centre, which will open as Gatecrasher Apartments - a home for more than 240 students from September.

Communal features include a gym, cinema room, a lounge and an internal courtyard landscaped as a record turntable to reflect the previous use of the land, which is on the doorstep of Sheffield Hallam University.

The renowned nightclub, which spent five years in the old Roper and Wreakes factory, was destroyed by fire in June 2007. Now a six-storey complex is taking its place, providing 243 beds, mostly in clusters of three, four and five beds, all en-suite.

In addition, there will also be 90 one-bed studios each with a kitchen with integrated full-size oven & appliances, breakfast bar, large fitted wardrobe, settee, double bed and 40 inch Smart TV & includes 50GB broadband.

Gatecrasher Apartments will be part of the West One accommodation portfolio that already runs student flats in Sellers Wheel in Arundel Street, Huttons Buildings in West Street and at Broomgrove Apartments on Broomgrove Road, as well as the West One residential, leisure and commercial development in Fitzwilliam Street.

Andrea Marsden, marketing and residential manager, said: “One of the big advantages of Gatecrasher Apartments is the location near Sheffield Hallam University along with all the amenities of this exciting area of the City.

“At the same time, the standard of accommodation is very high and offers good value for money. The communal areas are impressive. There is a gym that does not require membership and a cinema room with a big screen for students. The lounge will have facilities such as table tennis and table football.

“The apartments have a scheduled completion date of July ready for letting to students from September 1. We are offering 10, 11 and 12 month contracts.”

West One Student Accommodation is part of Sheffield-based City Estates, which has also developed student flats & City Centre residential developments in Glasgow, Nottingham Bradford and London has a diverse nationwide investment portfolio.

Dale Fixer, the managing director, added: “The delivery of student accommodation is an increasingly competitive market. There is nothing ordinary about Gatecrasher Apartments. Generous proportions, quality fittings and painstaking attention detail throughout set it apart from the rest and at very competitive rents.”

The Gatecrasher complex will have shops and offices at ground level, a ‘green’ environmentally-friendly roof and be part of the Community Heat and Power scheme that is linked to the Bernard Road incinerator.

Architects Cartwright Pickard designed the Gatecrasher Apartments.

Rent for shared Gatecrasher Apartments will be from £110 a week, including all bills, studios from £135 a week. A show apartment is due to open from July 1.
