Discount Card and the benefits of buying local

Money saving discount card helps raise awareness of the benefits of buying local.

A community discount card has been launched in Consett, Co. Durham with the aim of encouraging people to spend money locally, helping local businesses and raising funds for local good causes.

Businesses, charities and other community groups based in and around Consett, Co Durham are working together to help promote the Consett Community Discount Card and raise awareness of the positive benefits to the community of customers spending money with local independent businesses.

The Discount Cards which costs £10, offer cardholders unique discounts, worth hundreds of pounds, at a wide range of local independent businesses. A full list of offers available can be found on the briarylocal.co.uk website.

Businesses already involved range from Restaurants and Takeaways to new Windows and Doors. Trades from Electricians, Plumbers, Gas Engineers, Roofers, Cleaners and Gardeners. Shops for Carpets and Flooring, Tiling, Blinds and Curtains, DIY, Decorating, Garden Center and Florists and more.

Speaking about the scheme, Peter Brewis from Briary Local said ‘When you buy from an independent local businesses, the quality of what you buy, the level of service and also the cost, is very likely to be as good if not better than you would get from a large chain. The main benefit, however, comes from the fact that so much more of what you spend stays in the local economy and can be spent over and over again.’

Cards are available now and can be purchased at any of the following:

  • Online at the briarylocal.co.uk website
  • Participating shops and Restaurants including – Spice Venue, Wok n Go, Gralands, Decorbake, Consett Tile Centre, Beveridges Nursery, The Flower Shop Consett, GLP Carpets
  • Participating Charities and Community Groups including Willow Burn Hospice, Willow Burn Consett Shop, The Alt Group, Blackhill Club and Food 4U Consett Foodbank - £5 from each card sold goes straight to the group.

Local businesses, Charities, Community Groups and Sports Clubs are invited to get in touch if they are interested in joining the scheme.
