Coventry community group secure donation from housebuilder
A community group that has been putting on events in Coventry for more than 45 years will be hosting its next event in the city thanks to a leading UK housebuilder.
Persimmon Homes Central has selected Coventry Leofric Lions to receive a £1,000 donation as a part of its Community Champions initiative, which seeks to support local groups and charities working to improve the quality of life or environment for the community.
The scheme invites local groups and charities to bid for cash from a £750,000 national fund, with two donations of up to £1,000 being made locally each month.
For 47 consecutive years the Leofric Lions have organised high profile family fundraising events, known as the Donkey Derby and Charities Fair, in Coventry’s War Memorial Park.
The 48th event will be held on 3rd September, where around 5,000 people will enjoy a fun afternoon of donkey rides and other activities.
David Robinson, committee secretary at Coventry Leofric Lions, said: “We are thrilled to be receiving this generous donation from Persimmon Homes Central, which will greatly assist in putting on our latest event at Coventry’s War Memorial Park.
“Our club aims to raise around £7,000 to put on these events each year, but sadly the costs are ever-rising, meaning we are becoming more reliant on support from elsewhere.
“Our event also gives around 30 other charities the chance to set up stalls to raise funds for their own purposes.”
Amanda Benjamin, sales director for Persimmon Homes Central, said: “Coventry Leofric Lions are a hub of their community and have showcased a number of fantastic events in Coventry.
“We are proud to be supporting this, the charity’s 48th event, which is sure to be a fantastic occasion for families.
“Persimmon Homes Central has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.
“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
Persimmon Homes Central has three developments in Coventry including Paragon Park off Foleshill Road, Weavers Gate off Old Church Road and The Brooks on Holbrooks Way.
Leofric Lions are always looking for new sponsors and charity stallholders at their events. Further information can be found on the Lions’ website www.leofriclions.org.uk, or by calling 0845 8332821.
Community groups, charities and good causes across the region have benefitted thanks to the donations from Persimmon Homes. Organisations can apply for funding by completing a simple online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity
