Regional housebuilder supports independent hospice

A Midlands hospice is set to host a community walk after being announced as the latest recipient of charity funding from a leading housebuilder.

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in Selly Park, Birmingham, has been named a Persimmon Homes Central Community Champion and received £1,000 through the scheme.

Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions is an on-going national programme where charities and groups can secure funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves.

In its first year, Persimmon donated a total of £750,000 nationwide, and it has now been announced that the scheme is to be continued for another year.

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is an independent adult hospice providing care to people across Birmingham and Sandwell.

Events manager Lucy Watkins said: “We are delighted to receive such generous support from Persimmon Homes Central.

“Looking after 1,200 patients each year at home and in the hospice, we always provide the best possible end of life care – not just for the patient but the whole family.

“Our core vision is of a future where the best experience of living is available to everyone leading up to and at the end of life and we do this by providing specialist care to terminally ill adults.

“We are hosting a Midsummer Walk in June and hope to raise £25,000 for the Hospice and attract more than 400 participants. It costs about £4,000 to host the event and this fantastic donation from Persimmon Homes will help us cover the costs.”

It costs £8 million to run the Hospice for a year and just £16 could pay for a nurse to look after a patient for one hour.

Amanda Benjamin, sales director for Persimmon Homes Central, said: “The Community Champions Scheme was devised to help local charities and organisations making a real difference in the neighbourhoods where we build, and we are delighted to support Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice Midsummer Walk.”

Community groups, charities and good causes across the region have benefitted thanks to the donations from Persimmon Homes. Organisations can apply for funding by completing a simple online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity

Persimmon Homes Central has recently released its latest development in Selly Oak, Birmingham, with the housebuilder releasing a range of two, three and four bedroom homes to suit all tastes.
