Rob braces himself with the BD BioDisc

No self-respecting wastewater engineer expects to find every site they attend perfectly clean, tidy and with no sewage build-up. However, every so often, our Servicing Engineers are called to a site where even they are amazed by the condition of the system! Rob visited this pub near Barnsley this week, not for a quick drink or a lazy lunch, but to service their Klargester BD BioDisc on site. The sewage treatment system had been historically very neglected, with infrequent servicing and emptying, and as such the build-up of sewage had caused such a strain on the system that the motor/gearbox driving the rotating discs had completely failed. If there is a problem on a Klargester BioDisc that results in the discs failing to rotate, there will be no treatment of incoming sewage through the media discs. This essentially means that until an engineer attends to repair the system, raw untreated sewage will be illegally discharged. This can result in an Environment Agency fine, so rapid attention is required! Luckily, all our engineers keep a wide range of brand new parts on their vans for a quick swap, so Rob was able to remove the failed motor/gearbox and fit a new one. He also needed to install a new non drive-end bearing onto the shaft, and a new loss of rotation alarm including a reed switch and magnet. This fits onto the discs and the side of the tank and as the discs rotate they connect – however, if the discs fail to rotate in the future, this lack of connection will trigger the alarm so that the customer can contact us before problems occur. After these repairs, the system was due a thorough empty and wash down to return it to its former glory. Rob left the site needing a shower, but at least the BioDisc is now fully operational and ready to go! Don’t worry if you’ve ignored your system in the past – what’s important is that you get on top of the maintenance now.
