Tech startup from Barnsley to launch 3D smartphone technology at Gadget Show Live

Tech startup 3DU are to launch a new accessory that brings 3D technology to smartphones at the Gadget Show Live this month.

The Barnsley-based company, who were founded in 2015, have been selected as the sole UK distributor of a screen protector and app that, in combination, allows users to view 3D content on their smartphones without the use of 3D glasses.

The product is the first of its kind in the UK and utilises US developers 3D Vision Technologies’ Whoosh3D app which allows users to stream content to their phones.

3DU, who are based at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley, are hoping to develop the technology further to provide 3D house viewing for estate agents, 3D scanning for medical use and for the first time, 3D gaming for smart phones.

Managing Director of 3DU, Tom Kitchen-Dunn said: “This is a really exciting time for the company. Everything is going 3D nowadays and it was only a matter of time before this technology became hand-held.

“We’re really excited about bringing this product to the UK market at the Gadget Show Live later this month.”

Tom was also complimentary about the help the company has received from the Digital Media Centre and Enterprising Barnsley, Barnsley Council’s free business advice service.

The Gadget Show Live is due to from 31 March to 3 April at the NEC Birmingham.
