Burrito chain brings 20 new jobs to Gateshead with Metrocentre rollout

Burrito chain Barburrito has opened a new restaurant in intu Metrocentre’s ever-expanding catering development, the Qube.

The move, which brings with it 20 new jobs to the Gateshead area, was first announced in summer last year and is now the latest in a string of new openings at the food quarter.

intu, which owns and manages regional shopping centres in the UK, is spending £16m on extending the Qube dining and leisure quarter at intu Metrocentre, which has two million sq ft of retail, catering and leisure space. This is part of intu’s £1.5bn investment pipeline in the UK over the next 10 years.

The 55-seater venue joins an array of newly-opened restaurants, featuring a host of world flavours, including American burger restaurant Byron, Meditteranean-inspired Est, Parisian-influenced Café Rouge, oriental restaurant Buffet King and Japanese Ikuze.

With the launch, Barburrito is inviting diners to build their own burrito rom a menu of traditional Mexican ingredients, all freshly prepared on-site.

Morgan Davies, founder and CEO of Barburrito, said: “We are thrilled to be opening our latest restaurant here in the North East - intu Metrocentre is a fantastic destination and a thriving shopping centre.

“We have proven to be popular in major shopping centres across the UK and provide customers a fast and fresh alternative to traditional restaurants.

“Since we started Barburrito 10 years ago, we have strived to provide high quality food at an affordable price and we look forward to welcoming intu Metrocentre shoppers to our new look Barburrito.”

Helen Atkinson, intu Metrocentre marketing manager, added: “We are delighted to welcome Barburrito to the Qube. “It is the perfect complement to our wide range of restaurants, which really do offer food inspired from countries across the world.”
