Contractors appointed to £4.5m Hoyland town redevelopment scheme

Wath Construction and Britcon have been appointed to deliver the £4.5m regeneration of Hoyland town centre, near Barnsley.

Property developer Resilienti appointed the two contractors to handle building work on the redevelopment project.

Wath Construction, in Wath-Upon-Dearne, has been responsible for the demolition and site clearance of the former NHS medical centre off Duke Street and the construction of a new 74 space car park on the site, as well as the demolition and site clearance of St Andrews Church Hall, on Market Street Hoyland.

Wath is currently redeveloping the former car park off Southgate, which will become the new Hoyland market site with 30 stalls, three kiosks, a disabled toilet, wash room and 26-space car park.

Britcon, the building and civil engineering firm, has been appointed as contractor for building a new 12,000 sq ft supermarket, Boyes’ new 6,000 sq ft department store on Market Street, a Ladbrokes betting shop and two other retail outlets.

John Whitmore, director of Britcon, commented: “The redevelopment of Hoyland is a really exciting project. Our team brings a wealth of experience in completing similar public realm improvements and we’re delighted to be working with Resilienti and Barnsley Council on this landmark scheme.

“As well as building the retail outlets, work is now well underway on Hoyland’s new market, which is being repositioned to its original location on Southgate and is due to open later in spring.”

Resilienti is working with Barnsley Council to bring new market, retail, car parking and jobs to the town. The project will also see Hoyland’s run-down Town Hall transformed into modern residential and office space.
