Campfire Recipes: Outdoor Gourmet
Camping can take its toll, especially if the food that you usually eat around the campfire is comprised strictly of hotdogs and marshmallows. Fret not, aside from processed meat and sugary mallows, you can try these campfire recipes out the next time you have your adventure. Who knows, you might come up with a full course gourmet meal in the middle of nowhere.
How to Fold
Before you learn campfire cooking recipes, you would need to know how to fold tin foil into packets that you can use for cooking over the campfire.
You would need heavy duty foil instead of the regular foil and cut them up into square pieces. Place the food you’re cooking at the center of the square and make creases at the end of the longer side of the food. Bring the ends together like a cradle and then fold once over with the ends meeting just the top of the food. Fold it again so that the folded over edge is settling over the food. Crease the open ends together by folding them until they are close to the food. The main goal is to minimize the air around the food.
Campfire foil recipes are full of fun and are easy to do, simulating one-pot meals that you do at home.
6 Delicious Campfire Recipes
#1: Ham and Cheese Pull Apart Loaf
This takes about 25 minutes to cook and it is so easy to do. Just take a loaf of bread and slice it all around, crisscrossing at certain points. Insert slices of cheese and ham along these slices (you can add spices at this point). Next, spray some oil on the foil pocket before placing the bread in the center, and fold the foil packet up. Place it over a grill and wait for the meal to get cooked
#2: Cheesy Chili Fries
Take some frozen fries, add some cheese and chilies. Spray some oil on the foil pocket and fold the foil packet up. Place it over a grill and cook for about 10-15 minutes.
#3: Quesadilla
If you feel exotic, then this recipe will definitely be for you. Start by spraying some oil on the packet. Place a tortilla slice over the center of the foil and fill it with the desired fillings like cheese, meat and spices. Place another tortilla on top and seal the packet and grill over the fire for about 10 minutes.
#4: Fish Packets
Foil packets are a great way to cook fish, ensuring that it is thoroughly cooked and the flavors are sealed in. Follow these steps:
Place some butter over the foil, spread it around a bit. Center the fish on the foil. Rub some salt and pepper all over the fish and squeeze half a lemon over it. Seal up the packet and grill. Check the fish from time to time; it usually takes 5-10 minutes for fish to cook.
#5: Herb Steak
This recipe is perfect for any meat lover. Wash your steak cut thoroughly and drizzle some oil over your tin foil. Put some crushed garlic all around it and sprinkle a generous amount of salt and pepper on the steak before placing it in the center. Add a sprig of rosemary and some thyme over the steak and squeeze half a lemon over it. Wrap the foil packet tightly and grill over the file.
Cook for 8 minutes for medium rare.
#6: Chicken BBQ
Simple and extremely delicious, this recipe only requires a few simple steps. First, take some chicken breasts and clean it thoroughly. Rub some salt, pepper and basil over the chicken and drizzle some oil over the packet. Put some garlic and onions on the packet before placing the chicken.
Seal it up and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes. You can add some potatoes and carrots to the mix to make a complete meal.
Dessert
No meal is complete without dessert and here are some easy campfire recipes to sweeten the deal.
Banana Boats
This is a fruity version of the classic S’mores.
Take a banana and slice it along the center without completely cutting in. Do not remove the peel. Alternately insert marshmallows and chocolate chips along the center. Place two bananas in a foil, seal it up and grill for about two minutes until the marshmallows and chocolate chips have melted. The result may not look pretty but it sure is delicious.
Cinnamon Peaches
You can interchange apples and peaches for this recipe.
Cut some peaches and remove the center. Sprinkle ground cinnamon and brown sugar over it. You can add some mint leaves before closing the packet up. Grill for about 30 minutes. Serve with ice cream as desired.
There are a few more recipes out there that you can make over a campfire. One thing to remember though, you can always make these at home using your grill whenever you want, but enjoying these meals while camping brings in another level of gusto.
