Awards galore; Dine by the Tyne chefs announced

Michelin guide mentions, AA rosettes, a MasterChef finalist and a curry king will feature among the names that will be delivering dinner with a difference this May.

The four-day Dine by the Tyne event will see diners fastened into the special sky table and hoisted 100ft in the air with a different guest chef preparing their own speciality for each of the nine flights a day over Gateshead’s performance square.

Now, it had been announced that chefs from Newcastle eating institutions including Marco Pierre White’s, The Gin Bar and River Beat will take their unique styles of food and drink to the skies from the 12th-15th May.

MasterChef finalist Dave Coulson from Jesmond’s Peace and Loaf will serve up his no fuss fine dining in the sky and will bring with him two highly coveted AA rosettes as well as a mention in 2016’s Michelin good food guide. He says it will be a real challenge but one he is looking forward to.

“I’ve cooked in a few unusual places but I can honestly say the sky isn’t one of them. It’s going to be something unusual and maybe a little outside my comfort zone as far as being a chef goes but it’s always good to get out of the kitchen into somewhere new.”

Dishes on flights will range from Redhouse’s Neil Jefferson’s award winning pies to Chris Wood of Hawthorns and his traditional British meals; meals which saw him awarded two AA rosettes.

Bob Arora from Sachins will be bringing the finest Punjabi cuisine, which has seen the restaurant build a reputation as one of Newcastle’s finest curry houses for over 30 years. Bob says the sky table will be a true test for chefs:

“Every one of the guest chefs getting involved has their own style and it’s going to be a real challenge to be up there. I’m sure we’re all going to be up for that challenge though and I’m sure we won’t just deliver great food but also an experience people won’t forget in a hurry. I know I won’t forget it for a while – it’s definitely one for the memory box of life!”

Over the 36 total flights to be made during the sky table’s stay, diners will be treated to a stunning view of the Newcastle and Gateshead skylines in addition to each chef’s individual specialities. Corrie Thomas from Omni, Monkseaton will serve up breakfast each day and says it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the region’s food culture.

“I think the north east, and Newcastle especially has such a rich history of food and it’s great to showcase it like this. We’re all excited to get started on something we’ve not seen before.”
