Sainsbury’s to create 150 digital and tech jobs in Manchester
Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has announced a new recruitment drive in the North West to shore up digital presence.
The firm is hiring 150 software developers and engineers to work at its offices in the Arndale Centre, Manchester.
According to The Guardian, Sainsbury’s digital and tech director, Jon Rudoe, said: “The world is changing rapidly.
“Our vision is for Sainsbury’s to have a world-class digital and technology function to ensure that we can deliver great services for our customers whenever and wherever they want to shop with us.”
Speaking further, Jon said Sainsbury’s chose Manchester for the recruitment drive as it is the UK’s biggest tech hub outside London.
The new hires, Sainsbury’s confirmed, will work alongside 900 tech-savvy professionals based in Coventry and London.
Over the last year, the company has more than doubled its digital and tech workforce with 480 hires in a bid to compete successfully against online retailer Amazon and Tesco, the UK’s biggest online grocer.
Sainsbury’s is currently in the process of buying national retailer Argos, which could help broaden its offer and shift some of its focus away from the UK’s competitive food retail sector.
