Surviving austerity in the new public sector
An austerity survival guide for public service managers has become a number one best selling book - as the sector continues to face unprecedented budget cuts. How to Survive Austerity: A Manager’s Guide to Doing More With Less and Emerging as a Leader in the New Public Sector is the first book by Mike Gill and offers an essential guide for public service managers who want to deliver results in challenging times and maximise their chances of survival. The book officially launched last week and quickly became a number one best seller on Amazon for both paperback and the Kindle edition.
Mike Gill, 54, is originally from the North East and now works predominantly in London and Edinburgh. He has been a business consultant for over 25 years , working with more than 200 public sector organisations to improve the efficiency of services and deliver transformation. Mike is a Partner at Libre LLP and Director of iHive and iDeeter.
He said: “The pressures we’re now seeing on public service finances is unprecedented. Despite being the backbone of service delivery, many managers within the sector feel helpless in the face of austerity. Many fear for their livelihoods and feel overwhelmed by the scale of change they are being asked to deliver. They are being forced to do more with less, they are under pressure to constantly justify budgets and they face extremely uncertain times. But clearly public services can’t remain as they are.
“A new public sector is set to emerge from these significant changes taking place. It needs to be leaner, more efficient, more for less and it’s certainly going to be more demanding.
“I wrote How to Survive Austerity to ensure managers, and their staff, are ready to proactively face these challenges and to help them get ahead of the opportunity curve. I believe the key to surviving the impending changes across public services is to present your service in the best way, ensure everyone understands what you do, how much it costs and why they should ‘cherish’ your service. My book provides a no-nonsense 7-step framework to help managers do exactly that.
“I’m delighted that the launch of How to Survive Austerity has been so successful. I hope my book helps readers to improve their chances of survival during these times of austerity and enables them to emerge as one of the leaders in the new public sector.”
Alice Benton, Head of Primary Care at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG and former Lead Commissioner at NHS England said: “How to Survive Austerity provides practical and challenging new ways to face the ongoing and deepening pressures for public sector managers. However, it also reminds us that there is still so much to cherish and preserve. It’s a refreshing read which left an unfamiliar feeling of optimism.”
How to Survive Austerity: A Manager’s Guide to Doing More With Less and Emerging as a Leader in the New Public Sector, is published by Rethink Press and is available to buy on Amazon priced at £11.99 for paperback or £4.99 for the Kindle version. For further details visit www.newpublicsector.com
