Owen Pugh in the frame for portion of £1.5bn civils work

North East construction firm The Owen Pugh Group could secure further civil engineering and infrastructure works over the next four years, following successfully tendering for a place on the NEPO regional framework valued at up to £1.5 billion.

The full service civil engineering contractor, which has its headquarters in Dudley, North Tyneside and a number of sites across the region including Marsden Quarry near Sunderland, says it is well placed to play a key role in regional schemes being the highest ranked contractor across five of the seven lots it has been awarded.

Owen Pugh, which specialises in delivering innovative civil engineering construction and infrastructure services to government agencies, local authorities, private developers, industrial facilities, and utility companies among others, was ranked second in two further lots meaning it could potentially secure additional work between now and 2020.

John Dickson, chairman of The Owen Pugh Group, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have prequalified in first place position across five lots. We were up against a number of major national and international companies so this is a fantastic achievement in what is our 70th anniversary year.

“We have vast experience in delivering innovative civil engineering and infrastructure services both as a main contractor and subcontractor to clients across the North East and Yorkshire including work on technically challenging schemes, so we’re well placed to deliver on the opportunities this framework presents, and over the coming months will continue to invest in staff, plant and facilities to further augment our capacity to deliver the potential raft of work and other opportunities currently in the pipeline.”

North East local authorities, as well as education and health authorities are able to use the new framework across six work categories covering infrastructure projects, highways, highways structures, coastal, drainage and public realm works.

The framework, put in place by the North East Procurement Organisation (NEPO), featured a total of 14 lots of work, seven of which Owen Pugh tendered for.

The scope of work delivered by The Owen Pugh Group varies from road and bridge construction, ports, harbours and sea defences, industrial facilities and office parks to urban renewal and environmental improvements, land reclamation, remediation and environmentally sensitive schemes. The company employs more than 420 staff across five sites at Dudley near Cramlington, Blaydon, Middlesbrough, Bassington Lane in Cramlington and Marsden Quarry near Sunderland.

In recent months Owen Pugh has undertaken work on a string of high-profile projects, such as the £30m Morpeth Northern Bypass scheme, redevelopment works at the Port of Sunderland, the extension of Dalton Park near Seaham and the upgrade of the drainage network across County Durham.
