£100m investment at Liverpool2 continues with arrival of CRMG cranes

Six giant cranes have arrived at port operator Peel Ports’ Liverpool2 deepwater container terminal after making a 20,000km journey from Nantong in China.

The cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CRMG) cranes, manufactured by Chinese firm ZPMC, are the first of 12 needed to complete phase one of the terminal’s development.

Once finished, the facility will boast eight ship-to-shore (STS) cranes – five of which are already on site – and 22 CRMG cranes, representing a £100m investment.

Peel Ports’ chief exec, Mark Whitworth, said: “The arrival of this first consignment is yet another important milestone as we approach the opening.

“Along with the STS cranes, the CRMGs are a very visible sign of the investment we are making at the port, adding capacity and efficiency to a key trade gateway.”

He continued: “Liverpool2, supported by our wider logistics offering and the port’s strategic location, will provider many shippers with a route to UK and Irish markets that helps them to cut costs, congestion and carbon emissions.”

Set for a phased opening, elements of the semi-automated terminal are due to come online over the course of Q2 2016. Phase one of the deepwater container terminal is forecast to be fully operational by Autumn 2016.
