Plans submitted for £150m Milburngate House development in Durham

A development consortium has submitted plans for a multi-million pound project to create office space and hundreds of new homes in Durham.

The group, comprising Arlington Real Estate, property investment firm Richardsons Capital LLP and construction company Carillion, is seeking to regenerate Milburngate House as part of a £150m scheme to deliver 400 new riverside properties and as much as 150,000 sq ft of office space.

The submission follows a deal signed with cinema operator Everyman for the launch of a boutique cinema that will serve as the centrepiece of the site’s leisure offer.

Now, the development consortium is holding advanced talks with a number of restaurant and bar companies to set up shop at Milburngate House.

Neil McMillan, the development director at Carillion, commented: “We are delighted to have submitted this application, which will mark the next major stage of the regeneration of the northern quarter of Durham City and help Milburngate become a location of regional significance attracting visitors from across the North East and beyond.”

“We have received a high level of positive support for our proposals from local people, which, together with the commitment from Everyman, provide a strong endorsement for our vision for the riverside.”

Arlington Real Estate’s managing director, Allan Cook, called the Milburngate House regeneration project a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

He continued: “Milburngate will be delivered by our long-standing and experienced team all of whom share a vision of transforming Durham’s Northern Quarter into a truly world class location.

“Shaping such a large part of a World Heritage City Centre is a big responsibility, but I am confident that Milburngate, like Freemans Reach, before it will prove to be another exemplar development, which will see positive change for residents and visitors alike.”
