Transport Minister visits Peel Ports’ multi-million pound Liverpool2 terminal
Transport Minister Andrew Jones MP paid a visit to the Port of Liverpool this week to view the latest developments at Peel Ports’ Liverpool2 deepwater container terminal.
The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, who is responsible for the UK’s strategic roads network and ports, was today (May 16) given a tour of the site as he visited the city to discuss potential improvements to the A5036 corridor, a major roadway used by hauliers accessing the Port of Liverpool.
Mr Jones commented: “The container shipping industry plays a vital role in the UK’s economy, whether putting goods on shop shelves or in helping UK businesses to manufacture and export their products. It is also vital to job creation and skills development in the region.
“We will do everything possible to support the continued growth that is essential to our economic performance and international competitiveness.”
He added: “That’s why we have committed £13bn to creating a more efficient and integrated transport network across the North.”
The multi-million pound Liverpool2 development is set for a phased opening, with marine trials due to start soon and other elements of the terminal going live over the next two months.
Peel Ports’ group planning director, Warren Marshall, said: “The government has shown a strong interest in Liverpool2 throughout the development, recognising its importance as a key cargo gateway in a competitive global environment.
“We were honoured to receive a visit from the Minister to show him how we are adding to the UK’s trading infrastructure through our investment and contributing to the government’s Northern Powerhouse initiative.”
Mr Marshall continued: “We also welcome his support for improvements to the transport network that will help ensure the local economy can continue to benefit from the port in the decades to come.”
Earlier this month, work on Liverpool2 hit a significant milestone with the arrival of six giant cranes following a 20,000 km journey from China.
