British market leader takes global pole position

As the first trader in the world, Verdo has received a Sustainable Biomass Partnership (SBP) certificate. A global seal of approval, that guarantees an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable biomass. With the certificate Verdo is one step ahead of its competitors.

Verdo is the biggest manufacturer and retailer of woody biomass in Great Britain. But the increasing demand for sustainable biomass is a global trend. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, IRENA, biomass could account for 60 % of total final renewable energy use by 2030.

“We are among the best when it comes to biomass – not just in Great Britain, but worldwide. And we want to keep it that way. In order to do that it is not enough just to comply with the standards of sustainability, we must be ahead of the competition,” said Thomas Bornerup, direktor at Verdo Energy.

As the first trader in the world to receive a SBP-CoC certificate, Verdo is ready to supply the demand without compromising the sustainability of its biomass.

Global recognition

Biomass is a solid fuel made from wood pellets and wood chips. One of the many advantages of biomass is that it can be stored and used when needed, unlike other renewable energy sources. Furthermore, biomass has a significantly lower carbon footprint than coal or gas.

In order for biomass to be sustainable, it must be made from residual wood, trees from pre-commercial thinnings or waste wood from forests or plantations with sustainable forestry.

“Verdo can now document that their SBP certified biomass is sourced from sustainable forestry. It also allows Verdo to document the emissions related to production and transport of the biomass and ensure that their customers get the right data for their environmental report,” says Michael Jakobsen, Customer Relations Manager at NEPCon, the NGO responsible for issuing the SBP certification.

SBP’s vision is an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable solid biomass supply chain that contributes to a low carbon economy.

Besides the SBP certificate, Verdo is also FSC® certified.
