Tariq Drabu Discusses Gender Gap in UK Dentistry

Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon who was born and educated in Manchester in the United Kingdom. He is also one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the UK before working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Today he is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also finds time in his busy schedule to tutor and mentor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published on 16 May 2016 on a top dental news website. The full article can be read here.

Tariq Drabu in Manchester said “Young dentists in the United Kingdom have reported a gender gap when it comes to dentists. Minford Chartered Accountants conducted a national survey named “Women in Dentistry” where they found that women feel that there is a gender gap in the industry right now.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say “The survey conducted covered the attitudes of women within the dental industry with forty percent of those under thirty five claiming there is a gender gap with twenty three percent advising that there is no gap to be made aware of. Sixty five percent of those that took part in the survey are employed full time, twenty eight percent are employed on a part time basis and four percent were on maternity leave.”

Tariq Drabu closed in saying “The majority of those surveyed are very happy with their career growth to date and those that found that it was taking them time, were impacted by having children and taking care of their children. There is bound to be a slight gender gap within the industry as many women who also have a family, will be juggling the two, which could result in them not progressing as quickly as their male colleagues due to working part time rather than full time or taking time off for maternity leave, where their male counter parts continue to work. Looking at the older generation of dentists, the gender gap is minimal.”
