Newcastle's first Halal steakhouse opens in city centre

Newcastle’s ever-growing and diverse restaurant scene has been bolstered by the launch of Toro’s Steakhouse, the first Halal steakhouse to open in the city.

Owner Amair Mohammed has created the eatery out of an ‘empty shell of a building’ on Marlborough Crescent in the city centre, a stone’s throw from The Centre of Life.

The new venue, which has produced 11 new jobs, opens after almost five months of work on the interior, transforming a building which had stood derelict for a number of years.

Toro’s, which is part of a national chain, is the first of the company’s franchises to open in the North East. The Newcastle restaurant is the seventh in its portfolio, with the others in the Midlands and Southern England. Expansion into Scotland is planned in the near future.

Amair Mohammed said: “It has been a very big job to create this restaurant out of an empty shell of a building, and we have invested a lot of money in doing so, but we are delighted with the outcome.

“We have created new jobs in Newcastle, as well as opening an excellent steakhouse right in the middle of town, which serves high-quality Halal food at very reasonable prices. It is priced so there is something for everyone.”

The two-storey venue, which serves a variety of meats, can seat up to 90 diners.

Amair added: “The Toro’s brand is very well known around the country and we are very pleased to open the first one in the North East.”

The opening of Toro’s Steakhouse in Newcastle was supported by law firm Sintons, with leading licensing specialist Sarah Smith and real estate solicitor Danielle Dale both working on the transaction.

Sarah Smith, Partner in Sintons, said: “This is another welcome addition to Newcastle’s city centre leisure scene. As the first Halal steakhouse in the city, it brings yet another aspect to the vibrant and diverse offering we have here.

“The team have invested a lot of time and money to transform what was a derelict and dilapidated building into a 90-cover restaurant, and we wish them every success with it.”
