Owen Pugh wins £3m bulk earthworks contract
Civil engineering firm The Owen Pugh Group has landed a £3m contract to support the construction of a biomass combined heat-and-power plant (CHP) in Cramlington, Northumberland.
Awarded the work from Danish principal contractor Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC), the Dudley-headquartered company will soon undertake the bulk earthworks on the eight-hectare site, which will be home to the new Cramlington Power Plant.
The work, which is expected to take twelve months to complete, will involve the construction of access roads, drainage, attenuation ponds and the installation of multiple services and ancillaries.
Over 30 Owen Pugh operatives from Owen Pugh Civil Engineering, including construction, drainage and infrastructure specialists, are currently engaged in the project, as well as 15 managerial staff.
Jamie Macleod, site agent for Owen Pugh Civil Engineering, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed for BWSC to undertake this significant bulk earthworks project on what is a pioneering development for North Tyneside.
“As a full service civil engineering company, we’ve enlisted specialists from across all areas of the Owen Pugh business including construction, earthworks and drainage to ensure we deliver on time and on budget.
“The project has helped to safeguard a number of jobs in the local labour market for the next 12 months.”
Jonas Jacobsen, department manager for the Civil Works Construction Department at BWSC, said: “The conditions on site are challenging, and we need a team of contractors, who are all flexible and able to perform very high quality of works within a short period of time.
“We are therefore pleased to work together with Owen Pugh on this prestigious project, which will deliver green energy to the area in 2017.”
