Birmingham church receives housebuilder's charity prize
A church group in Birmingham is to set up a homework club for youngsters in the city thanks to a donation from a leading UK housebuilder. Persimmon Homes Central has selected St George’s Church & Centre to receive a £500 donation as a part of its Community Champions initiative, which seeks to support local groups and charities working to improve the quality of life or environment for the community. The church based in Newtown, Birmingham, is setting up the club to help young people with core maths and English skills. Alison Treasure, youth and families worker at St George’s Church & Centre, said: “We are extremely grateful to Persimmon Homes Central for the funding we have received. “We work with children and young people who experience multiple forms of deprivation, providing a free service that helps them grow and develop. “Our main aim is to enhance the self-worth and self-belief of our members and hopefully our latest project - the homework club – will do just that.” Persimmon’s Community Champions initiative invites local groups and charities to bid for cash from a £750,000 national fund, with two donations of up to £1,000 being made in Birmingham or Coventry each month. Amanda Benjamin, sales director for Persimmon Homes Central, said: “We are proud to be supporting this very worthy cause and we know that our donation will allow the group to continue to teach young people in Birmingham. “Persimmon Homes Central has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month. “If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.” The housebuilder has two developments in Birmingham including The Oaks off Raddlebarn Road, Martineau Gardens on Balden Road. Community groups, charities and good causes across the region have benefitted thanks to the donations from Persimmon Homes.
