UK’s Leading Energy Consultancy to Deliver Hydrogen Demonstration Project in Orkney

One of the UKs leading strategic energy consultancies is celebrating another successful appointment only a matter of weeks after being selected as a European Commission expert panel member for the commercialisation of innovative technologies.

Systeng Consulting – based in Edinburgh – has announced its appointment as part of a project management team that will deploy a renewable-based integrated energy system in the Orkney Islands. The project also holds the possibility of being replicated to other island and remote territories in the European Union and further afield. The project – which will assist the region to move towards a low carbon economy – will focus on the generation of hydrogen from constrained renewable sources including wind and marine, with the purpose of storing for later use in low carbon transport, heat and power applications.

Co-funded from the European Horizon 2020 programme and the Scottish Government, this €11 million demonstration project will be delivered and coordinated by the Spanish-based Aragon Hydrogen Foundation and is expected to start this summer. Systeng Consulting will act as the main UK-based subcontractor of the Aragon Foundation and is responsible for project deployment and on-site management activities.

Speaking about its appointment, founder and business owner of Systeng Consulting Dr Enrique Troncoso, said: “This is a superb project for us to work on and is a culmination of more than a year’s work to get if off the ground. We have been working with a number of partners in looking at how projects like this can be developed, commercialised and replicated to other EU territories. This project in Orkney gives us an incredible opportunity to demonstrate proof of concept for integrated sustainable energy systems in islands and remote regions.”

Expected to last for five years, the project is one of the largest to date for Systeng Consulting and is already generating considerable interest as one of the EUs largest hydrogen storage projects underway.

In its fourth year of business Systeng works with many of the global leading aerospace and energy companies, with Dr Troncoso currently working for Boeing Research and Technology. The company has a track record of developing public and private sector partnerships and - to date - has secured more than £35 million in private and public funding for advanced technology development schemes.

The company recently reported a 15% increase in turnover and has plans for expansion in the near future.
