Newcastle College event encourages students onto summer adventure

Newcastle College has teamed up with the fastest growing youth movement in the country to deliver a special event urging Newcastle’s young people to take up a life-changing opportunity this summer.

The college’s determination to enable local young people to be the best they can be gained extra momentum with a National Citizen Service (NCS) takeover day yesterday.

Held at the college’s Rye Hill campus, the event saw students taking part in exciting games and activities, including the chance to test their footie skills in the run up to the Euros. Local street food company Scream for Pizza were also on campus, serving up free food from their vintage van.

Throughout the fun-filled event, students learned about opportunities to reach their potential through the NCS summer programme, which is being billed as a ‘summer of a lifetime’. With departure dates for young people across the region from July-August, thousands of North East teenagers have already booked their place.

Tony Lewin, Principal of Newcastle College, said: “We feel it’s important that our students are given the opportunity to benefit from activities in addition to the curriculum that will help them in all aspects of life.

“We strongly believe in providing our learners with an exceptional student experience outside of their day to day studies and working closely with NCS helps us meet that goal.

“It was positive to see so many of our students taking up the chance to hear directly from NCS about the programme and how they can get involved.”

With NCS, teenagers aged 16-17 step out of their comfort zones in an adventure packed residential programme and learn essential skills to help them in life, work and studying, Young people also make a positive difference in local communities through the heavily subsidised scheme.

Kim Smith, Contract Director for NCS in the North East, said: “Newcastle College and NCS share an ambition for young people be given the opportunities and skills they need to succeed in life.

“It’s exciting to see teenagers in Newcastle and beyond seizing the chance to fast forward their futures on our summer programme.”

NCS costs no more than £50, with the cost reduced to £10 depending on circumstances, and covering accommodation, transport, food, everything.
