18th century hotel in Appleby sold for £575k
Bongate Guest House, a bed and breakfast based in Appleby, Cumbria, has been swept off the market in a six-figure deal.
The specialist hotels and licensed property team at real estate advisors Colliers International sold the property, which was originally built in the 1760s, from an asking price of £575k.
The hotel’s owners, John and Mary Geary, decided to sell so they could retire and live closer to their family, The buyer, Ann Jeffs, is relocating to Appleby from Bicester, near Oxford.
Comprising nine letting bedrooms and owners’ accommodation, Bongate House first served as the home of the estates manager at nearby Appleby Manor. In 1962, the site came into private ownership and was transformed into a guest house.

Commenting on the transaction, he said: “The spring 2016 market is proving to be a very busy period for Colliers International with a significant number of guest houses in Cumbria and the Lake District sold or in solicitors’ hands.
“Bongate House has performed consistently well, letting its bedrooms to a mix of local, business and leisure guests.”
