North Wales based food waste firm wins major industry award

Anaerobic digestion (AD) specialist Biogen has been recognised with a prestigious award in the recycling and waste management industry.

Biogen, which owns and operates food waste recycling plants near St Asaph and Caernarfon, was named letsrecycle.com’s Recycling Business of the Year at this year’s Awards for Excellence in Recycling & Waste Management.

Launched in 2004, the awards reward innovation, dedication and success within the waste and recycling industries.

The scheme diverts some of the food waste that currently goes to landfill, helping Flintshire, Conwy, Denbighshire and Gwynedd’s county councils to meet their recycling targets and avoid substantial fines for failing to meet those targets.

Biogen’s Waen plant in St Asaph and GwyriAD plant in Clynnog Fawr near Caernarfon recycle a collective 33,500 tonnes of food waste from households, supermarkets, the hospitality industry and food factories annually. They generate 1MW of renewable electricity for the grid – enough to power around 3,000 homes for a year.

Julian O’Neill, chief executive of Biogen said: “This is well deserved recognition for the outstanding effort and commitment of everyone at Biogen. And it’s great to mark our tenth anniversary with an accolade such as this.”

One of the UK’s leading anaerobic digestion specialists, Biogen employs 100 people and is responsible for seven AD plants across the UK, including a South Wales site in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The firm provides food waste treatment services to local authorities, food retailers, food manufacturers and commercial waste providers to the food and retail industries in England and Wales.
