Homeless charity receives accommodation funding

A Nuneaton charity which provides accommodation and living advice for homeless people in the town has received a community donation from a leading UK housebuilder.

Persimmon Homes Central has selected Doorway to receive £800 as a part of its Community Champions scheme, which seeks to support local groups and charities working to improve the quality of life or environment for the community.

Doorway works with young homeless people, helping them find accommodation and sustain an independent lifestyle, including budgeting skills, tackling mental health problems, as well as how to clean and look after a property.

Carol Gallagher, CEO of Doorway, said: “We are delighted to be receiving such a generous grant thanks to Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme and would like to thank them for making such a difference.

“It is fantastic news and it will be a massive help in equipping a new flat which we have acquired to keep homeless young people safe.

“We look after homeless people aged 16-25 and give them a personalised approach to suit their individual needs.”

The Community Champions initiative invites local groups and charities to bid for cash from a £750,000 national fund, with two donations of up to £1,000 being made in the region each month.

Amanda Benjamin, sales director at Persimmon Homes Central, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting a charity that does such a valuable job in its community.

“Doorway provides a fantastic service for those in Nuneaton and beyond, helping young homeless with both accommodation and important skills.

“Persimmon Homes Central has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.

“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
