Former Barnsley heritage farm to become multi-million pound housing development
A former heritage farm near Barnsley is set to house 11 new executive homes after the multi-million pound development was given the green light.
Yorkshire housebuilder Duchy Homes will develop the 1.5 acre site at Nether Mill, off Barnsley Road in Penistone.
Duchy appointed planning, design and economics consultancy Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP) to prepare and negotiate planning and listed building applications, which were submitted to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council earlier in the year.
Both applications were granted under delegated powers on Monday, this week.
Suzanne Phillipson, associate director at NLP’s Leeds office, said: “This development will significantly improve the appearance of a key gateway site at the entrance to the town.
“The potential for the delivery of much-needed executive housing, within such a sustainable location, has been identified as of particular benefit in the context of Barnsley’s lack of a five-year housing land supply.”
Duchy proposes four different house types which will be either detached four or five bedroomed houses.
All of the houses are two storey, in line with adjoining properties, and will be constructed in responsive materials including artificial sandstone and slate roof tiles.
Miss Phillipson added: “Whilst Nether Mill has some local heritage significance, the difficulty of its conversion and other factors, including securing the optimum use of this brownfield site for much needed housing, provide justification for its demolition.
“Additional archaeological investigation has enabled the applicant to provide further details of the history of the former corn mill.”
The site lies adjacent to Nether Mill House and Nether Mill Cottage which are Grade II listed, as is an adjoining, and a nearby barn.
These buildings had been included in a previous application for 20 homes which Barnsley resolved to approve in 2013.
