Wates starts Cumbria community investment with Carlisle United

Building firm, Wates Construction, is set to launch a Cumbria-wide community investment campaign in partnership with Carlisle United FC, forming part of the contractor’s growth in Cumbria.

Commencing with an initial sponsorship deal, it is expected that the relationship will see the two organisations work together to explore opportunities to benefit the local community.

Wates is currently building BAE Systems’ new Strategic Bulk Store in Barrow and is looking to extend its presence across Cumbria, targeting construction projects in education, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals.

The new joint initiative is the latest move in the contractor’s intended growth in Cumbria, which, the business has emphasised, will be used to create increased employment and training opportunities across the county.

Wates’ presence in the region recently saw the contractor hold a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event for Cumbria-based sub-contractors and suppliers to ensure that its growing project portfolio serves to boost local business growth, employment and training.

Tony Shenton, Business Unit Director of Wates Construction North West, commented: “Our business’ growth strategy in Cumbria has presented us with countless prospects to join forces with Cumbrian businesses and community organisations, and it is in building these relationships that we are able to enhance the opportunities available to the communities that we are working alongside.

“We have had a really positive start to our partnership with Carlisle United FC and it is undoubtedly a relationship that will continue to build upon a shared commitment to make a difference to the lives of local people.”

Phil King, Sales and Marketing Director, Carlisle United Football Club, added: “We are delighted that Wates Construction has signed up as a new partner to Carlisle United and that their branding will be seen pitch side at Brunton Park next season. We are very keen to continue to develop this relationship with Wates as they continue to expand their presence in Cumbria. We are always looking to work with local businesses in different ways, and also to be a conduit for businesses to engage with the local community.”
