Village community games a hit after £1,000 donation

A Somerset resident group has praised the success of its community games event after receiving a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes Severn Valley.

Haywood Village Residents Association (HVRA) in Weston-Super-Mare were awarded the cash as part of the builder’s Community Champions scheme.

The group partnered with West of England Sport Trust and Knightstone Housing to organise the celebration of sport earlier this month (June 12) to encourage families and the community to become more active.

Haywood Village is a brand new community of around 2,500 homes that is being developed by Persimmon Homes and is located on the site of the former air field in Weston.

Dave Robson, a spokesperson for the HVRA, expressed his delight at how the event had gone: “We believe hosting the Community Games presented a wonderful opportunity to strengthen community connections.

“We felt it was something that would appeal to people of all ages, regardless of their standard of sporting talent, and it is something we are keen to continue for years to come.

“The residents association wanted to continue the legacy of London 2012 by inspiring as many people to take part and of course with the Rio Olympics just weeks away it was perfect timing as sport it at the forefront of people’s mind.

“We thank Persimmon Homes Severn Valley for this donation and for helping us to make the event a reality.”

Community Champions scheme began last year allowing charities and groups to apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Nationally Persimmon Homes donated a total of £750,000 across the UK in the first 12 months of programme.

Nicola Hill, sales and marketing director of Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, added: “The Haywood Village Residents Association have shown great initiative and passion to unite the village.

“Their hard work is to be commended and I’m delighted we were able to contribute in some way.”
