Discovery Day at Escrick wood is a huge success

The Three Hagges Wood Meadow’s first ‘Discovery Day’ on Saturday 2nd July was a huge success for the charity.

Despite the showery and blustery conditions over 100 people came from surrounding villages to explore the plants, insects and pond life at the wood at Escrick, between York and Selby.

Families with young children had lots of fun crafting their own pipe-cleaner and bead dragonflies in the Bodger’s Den and had the chance to have their faces painted.

There was also the opportunity to dissect owl pellets with expert assistance to discover the diet of our local owl population - lots of frogs apparently.

Rosalind Forbes-Adam, chair of the charity, commented: “There were spotter sheets for intrepid explorers to wander the meadow and identify the various butterflies, grasses, wildflowers and insects who call the wood meadow home. Experts were also on hand to talk about the invertebrates found, both at the Bee Hotel and the pond. “We were absolutely delighted with the response. Comments from visitors included:

Rosalind said: “Part of celebrations for National Meadows Day, the Hagge Woods Trust hopes that from the Discovery Day, the families and individuals who joined us in the wood meadow will come again to walk and enjoy this new and developing ancient woodland and the animal life protected within its boundaries.

“Our hope is that Three Hagges Wood Meadow will grow the number of Friends coming to events such as the Bat and Small Mammal weekend, Butterfly Day, Moth Breakfast and Guided Walks happening soon and having their own little piece of the wood through our ‘Share Square’ scheme,” she added.
