Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeships: The new programme providing big business with future leaders

Sheffield Hallam University is helping to shape the future leadership of the corporate business world with Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeships – a new employer developed programme to grow the next generation of business leaders.

The trailblazer Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship was launched at Sheffield Hallam in 2015 as a closed programme for Nestlé UK and Ireland, which are part of the world’s leading nutrition, health and wellness company and boast over 8,000 employees across 20 UK sites.

Working alongside Sheffield Hallam, Nestlé offers employees the triple guarantee of a quality degree, on-the-job experience and professional membership of the Chartered Management Institute, which provides a pathway for future development.

The three-year programme includes the chance to combine a business and management degree at Sheffield Hallam with practical experience across four commercial functions; Sales, Marketing, HR and Supply Chain.

To date there are 22 apprentices are studying on the programme, split between Nestlé’s Gatwick Head Office and their Confectionery Headquarters in York.

Charlotte Mummery, head of academy talent acquisition at Nestlé, said: “We have found that the combination of practical, commercial experience at Nestlé and academic excellence at Sheffield Hallam is giving young people the skills that they need to become successful. It’s a great way for us to grow and develop our future business leaders.”

18-year-old Haleema Baker-Mir is one of Nestlé’s Chartered Manager Degree Apprentices. She said: “Everything I learn at university is directly applied to my job, for example I’m studying sales and marketing now, and when I move into a sales and marketing role as part of my rotation at Nestlé I’ll be able to apply that to my job. I find it incredible that at the age of 21, compared to my friends who did go to uni, I’ll have not only a degree but also a professional status.”

The programme has been so successful it has been promoted by the UK government as a flagship example of new degree apprenticeships in action.

If other businesses have 15 or more employees that could benefit from a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, they can create a similar dedicated programme with Hallam’s team of academics. Those taking part can be new recruits, existing staff or a combination of both.

Also, following this success, an open programme is being rolled out from autumn 2016, which will be able to accommodate lower numbers of staff, right down to one or two. That means employers of all sizes can benefit.

Sheffield Hallam has a history of delivering extensive higher and vocational programmes across a number of sectors with large corporate employers, such as JCB, Barratt Homes, Network Rail and the Kier Group.

Conor Moss, Director of Education and Employer Partnerships, Sheffield Hallam University, said: “Our experience shows that, through working with a range of businesses and combining both vocational and academic learning, highly effective programmes can be created to fill specific skills gaps. This can be aimed at young people and existing employees to develop talent already within the organisation.

“It is the perfect time to be planning for recruitment through our Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship programme. These qualifications offer a real opportunity for business to develop new and existing talent with support from government funding.

“In an ever more competitive and evolving market across all sectors, there is an increasing demand for bespoke higher-level skills. Sheffield Hallam has a proven track record in delivering the bespoke skills many of our corporate partners are seeking.”
